On Tuesday, August 1st, The Long Beach Police Department is inviting neighbors, community groups, and businesses to join them in celebrating the 40th Annual National Night Out to learn about crime prevention, safety tips, and creating neighborhood watch groups. The LBPD south officers will be hosting the event at Craftsman Village Park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by a movie showing at the park that will take place from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. This annual event promotes strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to create safer and more caring communities. The night encourages residents to lock their doors, turn on their front porch lights, and spend time outside with neighbors and law enforcement. Bay Shore Neighborhood Library to close for eight months

The Bay Shore Neighborhood Library, part of the Long Beach Public Library (LBPL), will undergo a scheduled renovation starting from Monday, August 14. The library will be closed for approximately eight months, with its last day of service on Saturday, August 12. During this period, all library services, including book returns, will be unavailable at this location. The renovation project, partially funded through Measure A, aims to restore the building’s exterior architecture and introduce energy-efficient enhancements such as window replacements. These improvements will enhance the overall visitor experience and infrastructure quality, ensuring the longevity of this public facility.

While the Bay Shore Library is closed, patrons can utilize three nearby neighborhood libraries:

Alamitos Neighborhood Library (1836 E. 3rd St.)
Brewitt Neighborhood Library (4036 E. Anaheim St.)
Los Altos Neighborhood Library (5614 E. Britton Dr.)

City advises residents to take precautions against summer heat

To combat the heat, all City Parks, Recreation and Marine Community Centers, as well as Long Beach Public Library locations, are available as designated cooling centers during their regular business hours. The city has outlined tips for residents to stay cool and recognize heat-related illness during the hottest time of the year.

Tips to Stay Cool:

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
Limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours (noon to 4 p.m.).
Seek air-conditioning or take cool showers or baths during hot periods.

Hydration is crucial:

Drink plenty of fluids, even before feeling thirsty.
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks as they can cause dehydration.
Replenish lost salt and minerals with sports drinks or salty snacks.
Ensure pets have access to sufficient water.

Protection against heat-related illnesses:

Apply sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) before going outside and reapply regularly.
Wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses providing 100% UVA and UVB protection.
Use pool barriers and supervise children near water.
Never leave children or pets unattended in parked cars or direct sunlight.

Recognizing Heat-Related Illness:

Seek immediate medical attention if temperature rises to 103°F or higher, loss of consciousness, fast and strong pulse, or symptoms last more than an hour.
Look for signs like heavy sweating, cold and pale skin, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, and confusion.

LBPD introduces new app to divert at-risk individuals from criminal justice system

The Long Beach Police Department has introduced a new smartphone app called “Guides” as part of its ongoing efforts to divert at-risk individuals from unnecessary involvement in the criminal justice system. The app connects people to crucial housing, mental health, and substance-use services. Developed in partnership with the city’s Law Enforcement Assistance Diversion program (LEAD), Guides equips officers with real-time information about available resources, allowing them to redirect low-level offenders towards social services instead of criminal charges or incarceration. The app is being paired with the LEAD program, which has already helped hundreds of people access much-needed services. Although initial usage has been modest, authorities expect the app’s value to grow as LEAD expands citywide and the app is updated with more resource information. The success of Guides may pave the way for similar smart technology in other cities and counties to create safer communities through compassionate and effective policing. Learn more here.
