Black History Month is here, and although we still cannot have in-person celebrations, there are plenty of virtual events going on throughout the month. Here’s a list of events hosted by Long Beach institutions that you can attend from the comfort of your home.

African-American Festival by Aquarium of the Pacific

In its 19th year, the African-American festival will be hosted by the Aquarium of the Pacific on Saturday February 27. The virtual event will feature music, dance, storytelling, and historical displays. The event will lead up to the Heritage Award that will be presented to Felton Williams, Ph.D.

CSULB’s Black History Month 2021

Cal State Long Beach will have a total of eight virtual events open to the community. Events will include Entrepreneurship for Black Entrepreneurs, Black Table Talk: A space for conversations about race and other issues impacting the Black Community, and guest speaker Tamika Mallory. Some events require RSVP, so make sure to visit the online flier for more information on each event.

Afro Latinx Festival 2021 by the Museum of Latin American Art

Hosted by the Museum of Latin American Art, this festival is designed to celebrate the African influence that has grown throughout Latin America. The festival will consist of multiple virtual events including lectures, artistic presentations, music, and even martial arts.

Some of the events: Anti-Blackness In Latin America, De Colores: A Black & Brown Conversation, and a performance by Ariana & Alán: The Kindred Tour. 

Date & Time: Events begin February 18 and continue throughout the month of February.

Long Beach City College’s Black Heritage Month

The month-long celebration will be hosted by Long Beach City College and will be available for the Long Beach community. Events will include: Black Women Spea: An Open Conversation, Black Mental Health Matters, and keynote speakers like actress Isis King and Dr. Gloria Willinghan-Touré.

“Take Flight” Celebrating our Tuskegee Airmen Heroes

Tuskegee Airmen were the first Black Military aviators in the U.S Army Air Force; they got their name from their first training base in Tuskegee, Alabama. On February 27, 2021, the African American Heritage Society of Long Beach will be hosting a virtual event in honor of Tuskegee Airmen. The event will host guest speakers Doug Melville (TED Speaker and Diversity Leader) and Leon Johnson, president of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc.
