As with so many other things this year, we’ll have to get creative when celebrating Halloween safely. While it may not feel like the traditional Halloween we’re used to (with the usual trick-or-treating or big costume parties), it’s still possible to have a great time at home with a little forethought and planning. Let’s find some simple ways you can have a safe and spooktacular 2020 Halloween!
Scavenger Hunt Trick-Or-Treating
Since giving out candy the tradition, door-to-door way isn’t recommended this year, trick-or-treating at home can be as fun. Reframe trick-or-treating by having a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt either inside or outside. Kids can still show off their creative costumes while searching for all sorts of hidden goodies, small pumpkins, or even toys. Why not plan a neighborhood costume parade before the hunt and take photos along the way?
Fun Family Activities
Host a family fun night where everyone can just let loose and have a blast. Halloween Karaoke with themed songs, Halloween charades, freeze dance, Heads Up trivia game, or spooky board games like Clue. Alternatively, you could create a movie night (there’s a Harry Potter marathon on the SciFi channel!). Weather permitting, hang up a sheet for movies in the backyard. Have blankets and pillows for cozy seating while you sip apple cider, and snack on classic Halloween treats.
Virtual Tours
If you love the creepy side of Halloween and you miss being able to visit haunted houses, why not enjoy a spooky virtual tour? There are several links to virtual tours available for the historical Paris Catacombs, haunted houses, or even Long Beach’s own Queen Mary. You can still be scared to death, all from the comfort of home!
Get Crafty
Halloween is the perfect time to get crafty, especially if you’re spending more time at home. Making homemade costumes using only what you already have at home is a fun and rewarding challenge. Plus, it can produce a whole lot of laughs along the way! Even making a face mask to match a costume can really bring out creativity and maybe even encourage kids to be more comfortable wearing their masks.
Halloween can still be a fun-filled celebration this year. Tune in to your inner creative genius and see what ideas you can come up with to celebrate with your family. Who knows, you might even come up with a few new Halloween family traditions!
