How to Cheer up your At-Risk Neighbors

In Long Beach, we are blessed with amazing people who provide a supportive, caring environment and look out for one another. In light of the Covid-19 crisis and its aftermath, many of our community members are left without easy access to food, services, and even the comfort of a friendly conversation. Now more than ever, being a good neighbor is vital to the health of our community.

Thankfully, there are many ways we can help to make life easier for our neighbors while maintaining the necessary social distancing guidelines. Let’s dive into how you can be a better neighbor and strengthen your community.

Keep in Touch

Social distancing doesn’t mean we have to stay apart emotionally. If you know of elderly neighbors or people in your area who live alone, consider offering your phone number to them or stopping to say hello from a distance if you see them outside. Share some positive moments you’ve had or reminisce on some happy neighborhood memories to lift spirits.

Lend a Hand

Does someone in your neighborhood struggle to get to the grocery store? Do they need help making a doctor’s appointment or getting in touch with out of town family? Many people find it hard to ask for help, so keep an eye out for those who may need an extra hand and simply ask them what they need. Here’s a tip: “How can I help?” is more inviting than “Do you need help?”

Offer Your Talents

Do you have a special skill that others could find useful or comforting? Share your talents and interests with your neighbors to fight the blues and boredom. Are you an expert in all the best movies? Start a classic movie watching challenge in the neighborhood. Found helpful ways to entertain little ones? Share your tricks in a neighborhood forum. Are you a whiz in the kitchen? Offer up your best recipes to give your neighbors something new to try.

Whether you offer a friendly hello or offer to pick up groceries for your neighbors, it will be a much-appreciated gesture. Stay safe and be well!
