Compound, the newly revamped restaurant and art space nestled in Zaferia, presents “Compound Sound” a live music series highlighting local talent. The series is a collaboration with Twelves, a record store founded by Hector Waluyo, a longtime member of the city’s DJ scene.

The series will showcase both local and out-of-area artists, hoping to bring a spotlight to community within the arts scene of Long Beach.

Twelves is also hosting pop-up sales at Compound every weekend, bringing a curated selection of records for customers to peruse.

“When I moved here, it felt more tight-knit,” Waluyo said. “I love LA, but there is sadly a lot of people of migrating to LA and leaving, which makes it hard to feel connected.”

Waluyo moved to Long Beach seven years ago, after spending years in the LA club scene. In the years since, he’s become a notable figure in the city’s music scene, due to his knack for curating sonic experiences with the community in focus.

“I started out DJing in clubs as soon as I turned 21,” Waluyo said.

His love for DJing stems from a much older love for music, collecting, selling and trading vinyl. This hobby for exploring different sounds is what eventually led to the opening of Twelves, located on 7th street in Long Beach.

“My main passion with Twelves is the idea of sharing music with someone. That really drives me to do what I do.” Waluyo said.

The new collaboration with Compound is an opportunity for the community to engage in new sounds and rediscover familiar favorites.

“To showcase new sounds with the people we book and showing music outside a record store is exciting for me, and it also helps the community.” Waluyo said.

Waluyo also hopes to turn this opportunity into more events for the DJ community in Long Beach by potentially hosting workshops to help those interested in DJing get started as well as connect them with others with the same passion.

“Being able to have a bigger space with Compound makes it so we can create an experience that you can’t really have in a record store,” said Waluyo.
