The Long Beach City Council unanimously approved a new sidewalk vending ordinance during its Jan. 23, 2024 meeting, aimed at fostering entrepreneurial opportunities while prioritizing public health, safety, and ADA access. Effective from Feb. 23 of this year, the ordinance decriminalizes sidewalk vending but requires vendors to obtain a business license, sidewalk vending permit, and health permit. The city aims to streamline processes and reduce barriers, offering financial assistance to vendors in the first year. The ordinance also outlines regulations for food safety, placement, size, and accessibility considerations, with enforcement emphasizing education about the ordinance. The Sidewalk Vending Program, funded by the Long Beach Recovery Act, will offer this education to vendors during the first year. The ordinance and its enforcement will be evaluated approximately six months after implementation. Learn more here.
