Long Beach Invites Applications for Police Oversight Commission
Long Beach has opened applications for seven commissioner positions on the newly established Police Oversight Commission. The commission, formed in 2022 after the approval of Measure E, aims to enhance public trust in the Police Department. Commissioners will review high-profile incidents involving officers, provide input to the director, and gather community feedback. The application period runs until Dec. 6, and interested residents can apply online. Mayor Rex Richardson, who will select the commissioners, emphasizes the role aims to improve transparency, accountability, and public service. The appointed commissioners are expected to begin their responsibilities in March 2024 after undergoing required training and background checks. Free Youth Fishing Derby at El Dorado
The annual Youth Fishing Derby is scheduled for this Saturday, Nov. 18, at El Dorado East Regional Park. Geared towards young anglers, the event provides a distinctive outdoor experience, expert fishing guidance, and opportunities to win prizes. Registration is free and starts at 8 a.m., with the derby running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fishing equipment will be supplied, and participants above 16 years old must possess a California State Fishing License. Supported by local organizations, the event promotes family involvement and promises a day of enjoyable family activities at El Dorado Regional Park. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Celebration Returns January 2024
The city of Long Beach proudly presents the 2024 Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Celebration. This family-friendly event, held on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, in Central Long Beach, honors the life, values, and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and Anaheim Street, followed by a park celebration from noon to 5 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Park (1950 Lemon Ave.). The celebration includes a main stage with live entertainment, a kid zone, food and merchandise vendors, and more. The event, a tradition for over 30 years, aims to celebrate the diverse community of Central Long Beach and keep alive the values of Dr. King through arts, remembrance, and meaningful perspectives. Mobile Access Centers Expand Outreach in November
The city is extending its outreach efforts to address homelessness through its Mobile Access Centers (MAC) at various locations throughout November. This initiative includes an additional Downtown location, with more locations anticipated in the future. The MAC vehicles play a crucial role in reducing barriers to providing case management services and resources for individuals experiencing homelessness. The Homeless Services Bureau’s outreach staff can engage with and build relationships with individuals on the streets, facilitating the intake process on-site. As of Oct. 27, the MAC has engaged with and offered services to 485 people experiencing homelessness in October alone. Since its inception, the MAC has recorded 3,023 engagements, providing 1,683 services, including shelter referrals, enrollment into the homeless services system, connections to community resources, and basic services. Grand Opening of Alamitos Beach Concession Stand
Last Friday (Nov. 10), the city of Long Beach and community leaders celebrated the grand opening of the Alamitos Beach Concession Stand right next to the Gaucho Beach food court The concession stand, built in preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games, replaced the former one-story building. The new 5,500-square-foot facility features a two-story café, outdoor and indoor seating, a rooftop deck, an outdoor play area and games corner, new restrooms, and an upcoming sports rental/retail facility. The project, totaling $10.1 million, was funded from the city’s Tidelands Fund. Learn more here.
