As the summer days wind down and the excitement of a new school year approaches, families and students in Long Beach are gearing up for a fresh academic start. However, the cost of back-to-school supplies can sometimes pose a challenge for households. Long Beach is hosting events throughout the rest of August to ensure every student is equipped with the necessities they need for school. Here are five events that will be providing free school supplies, haircuts, bike repairs, and more!
Back to School Jam – Scherer Park
On Saturday, August 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Scherer Park will be hosting a free back-to-school event courtesy of Councilmember Al Austin, Crossroads Long Beach, and various local community organizations and businesses. This is a big event that will expect around 1500 students, and supplies will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Children must be present to receive the school supplies. Attendees can look forward to an engaging day filled with live music, food, games, and even free haircuts. Back to School Fest – Bixby Park
The 4th Annual Back2school Fest is taking place Sunday, August 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bixby Park in Downtown Long Beach. Students of all ages can engage in interactive workshops, play educational games, and explore diverse learning opportunities. An array of activities will be offered, from arts and crafts to science experiments. Throughout the day you’ll have the chance to win prizes and giveaways. Donations are welcome at the event, and any donation over $75 will receive a free hoodie or shirt! Learn more here.
Back 2 School Bike Meet Up – Cesar E. Chavez Park
DIG LIFE is having their 3rd Annual Back 2 School Back Pack Giveaway and Bike Repair Meet Up at Ceaser Chavez Park, on August 19th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will offer free backpacks filled with school supplies, free haircuts, and free minor bike repairs for students who ride their bikes to school. Attendees will also have the chance to participate in a bike raffle. Students/scholars must be present to take advantage of these wonderful opportunities. Learn more here.
Back to School Bash – Drake Park
Back to School Bash is offering free school supplies, arts and crafts, and games for students up to ages 17. This event, hosted by the non-profit organization My Ancestors’ Dream, will be taking place at Drake Park (951 Maine Ave) on Saturday, August 26 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. You can also donate supplies by dropping them off physically at Ambitious Ales, Dappers and Dames Parlor, or Annex Training (according to the My Ancestors’ Dream Instagram page).
