Downtown Long Beach is gearing up for an intellectually stimulating evening on Thursday, March 21, as the Long Beach Public Library Foundation hosts a thought-provoking program featuring Los Angeles Times writer and KCRW journalist, Gustavo Arellano.

The central focus of the evening’s discussion will be on banned books and the profound role that libraries play in offering free and equal access to information. Gustavo Arellano, known for his insightful commentary and engaging writing, will share his perspectives on the significance of literature in shaping societal discourse.

Arellano will be joined by retired Long Beach Director of Library Services, Cordelia Howard, who will provide valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of preserving intellectual freedom. Additionally, the event will feature Justin Richmond, a seasoned journalist and co-host of the acclaimed podcast “Broken Record” alongside Malcolm Gladwell and music producer Rick Rubin.

Veronica Garcia Dávalos, Executive Director, and CEO of the Long Beach Public Library Foundation expressed her excitement about the event, stating, “We’re thrilled to host this candid evening with Gustavo Arellano and esteemed guests. The event discussion promises to be illuminating, exploring the intersections of literature, censorship, and the vital role of libraries in fostering intellectual diversity.”
